There is no doubt that building your first canoe is a fabulous thing to do and a fantastic achievement. If you are a hobbyist or even if you are an experienced boat builder, constructing your first canoe provides you with an awful lot of pleasure. Perhaps you want to build a canoe for your own personal use or even to present as a gift for a friend or family member? Whatever your reason is, when you get to the point of actually launching your boat, you will be fiilled with an immense sense of pride.
It is certainly worth pointing out that the single most important thing about building a canoe is that you must be able to consult good quality canoe building plans before any other considerations, as they will make your task a whole lot easier.
Without the correct blueprints, it is inevitable that costly mistakes will be made and precious time will be wasted. I have seen too many back yard canoes built without the the owner consulting proper plans and the end result is always the same, which is a poorly constructed, potentially unsafe boat.
Professionally drawn up plans are step by step simple, well laid out and easy to follow, even if you only posess basic do it yourself skills and tool kit. Safety is always paramount when constructing any type of boat, therefore consulting quality plans which have been thoughtfully laid out with safety in mind are an absolute must.
For your first build, you will need access to the raw materials which can usually be sourced at most local hardware stores. Plywood is an excellent choice for your first time build and is perfect for the hull due to its strength and flexibility.
There are several types of resins available and it is very important to select the correct type of course, because you do not want the epoxy going soft and this is especially important if your canoe is intended for use in salt water. The resin also needs to be fireproof, believe it or not as fire risk in open water must be minimised.
Forming your first hull is a real fun process and I for one prefer to build my canoes of a set of trestles which can be put together with ease.
Of course there are several different canoe designs that you can choose from depending on what your intention is, although don’t be put off by building a larger boat if that is what you want to do because it is really not that much more difficult at the end of the day.
A properly constructed canoe is a truly beautiful boat indeed which will serve you well for many years to come and who knows just what constructing your first vessel will lead to, perhaps you will become a professional boat builder too? Go for it… And most of all enjoy!
